Pastor sentenced to two years probation

JEROME, Idaho — A pastor from Jerome was sentenced to two years probation after pleading guilty in May to misdemeanor battery stemming from a violent incident with his wife.

Reverend Ron Matheney, of First Presbyterian Church, was originally charged with four felonies, including domestic battery, attempted strangulation, rape and sexual penetration with a foreign object.

Prosecutors say Matheney woke up his wife, Darlene Matheney, in August 2007, forced her to have sex, beat her and then prevented her from calling authorities.

Darlene Matheney told the 5th District Court judge she still suffers from psychological trauma.

Ron Matheney was unrepentant, claiming "My church is the victim."
